22nd. Learnt that somebody is sure to die on board the Sophia every voyage, last voyage 2 boys fell
overboard, and the voyage before that, a man fell from the mast head and was drowned.
23rd. Heard the sailors declare that they would shave all the passengers when they crossed the Tropics;
which made my Father very angry.
24th. Approaching the Tropics.
25th. Crossed the Tropic of Cancer, but there was no more said about shaving, as the Capt would not
allow it. I find the warm climates very agreeable.
26th. Saw hundreds of flying fish which are like small Mackerel, but with
4 wings.
27th. Beautiful weather, plenty to eat, but I do not like salt meat.
28th. Sunday. Saw a dolphin, the sailors had just caught; nothing can surpass the variety and beauty
of the colours of a dying dolphin, not even a rainbow, in an hour's time they caught another, weighing
I should think about 30 lbs.
29th. Saw thousands of flying fish pursued by dolphins.
lst.March had some dolphin for dinner.
